We went to a local carnival on Saturday and boy was it a hot day!
I remember the carnivals of the past when there would be decorated floats heading down the high street along with marching bands and majorettes. My cousin’s twin daughters were majorettes and as a family we would go to all the carnivals they appeared in to support them. There was always a real community spirit around then but sadly things are different now. I’m not sure when the changes began but I do remember the last time this particular carnival had floats and bands and it wasn’t all that long ago. We were a little late and had just parked the car on a roof top car park, not having time to get down to the street we watched the floats from the roof. Star was about two years old and Boo just a little baby. So I guess that would be about five years ago.
Now, our carnivals consist of lots of stalls promoting charities with games like Tombola and Hook a Duck, bouncy castles, carousel rides and a grass stage for performances from dancers, singers, fire eaters and such all day long. The procession may be gone but there is still lots of entertainment and fun to be had.
We made a bee line for the first bouncy castle where I was robbed £2 per child. The Little Man refused to go on, he wouldn’t even try. Star and Boo had lots of fun though.
Finally, the girls persuaded me to let them go on the big bouncy slide. I’d been trying to put it off because I know that Star has difficulty climbing these things, her poor co-ordination and weak core muscles mean she has real trouble getting to the top, then you have a dozen other kids clambering up pushing past her or climbing over her. I find it painful to watch, but she still insists on going on. This one proposed even more problems. Instead of the usual ‘bumps’ to assist the climb there was a tape frame. Basically the frame was useless apart from making it less slippy, but Star saw it as the only way to climb and tried her best to use the frame as a ladder. The other kids where just running past as she tried to climb this way, even Boo had been up and down three times before Star climbed to the top for the first time. I was crumbling inside watching her struggle with her weakness and over logic. However, she caught on quickly after her first climb and instead she walked up holding on to the side, ignoring the frame just like the other kids. She was still the slowest but she made it in half the time of her first attempt. I was so proud of her, what an achievement.

That's fantastic that she got to the top of the slide for a second time in a quicker way. I hate watching Ethan on things at the moment we can still get away with helping him but we won't be able to do that for long. I'm glad you had fun at the carnival.

It's great that Star just went for it and that she worked out how to do it by herself. A brilliant achievement.
We definitely have the Carnivals of the past here in Cornwall, they are something of a tradition and we'll be taking part in our second one today. From what you've said and the photos it was still a fab day out for all the family and a chance to have fun together. Thanks for sharing on Country Kids.

Looks like kids had a lot of fun on bouncy castle. I love watching kids playing on bouncy castles. They gets wilder but that is acceptable in the case of children. This is the age of getting wilder. After growing up you are not going to get any chance of doing this.
