Half term was our last chance to get some days out in while we could. Next week, Star will be going in hospital for two operations and the halo traction vest will be returned. So, we won’t be going anywhere for quite a while.
We pondered on where to go and the weather was not at it’s best so we were limited. We decided on Nottingham Castle because the girls have been reading all about Robin Hood (we couldn’t quite make it to Nottingham Forest) and we wanted a train journey and Nottingham is just about the right distance.
Nottingham Castle was first built in 1067 but has been demolished and rebuilt a few times since. Once a home to Royals it was finally restored as a museum in 1878 by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII
So we packed a picnic to have on the train journey and set off for Nottingham. When we arrived we took a short walk along the canal before reaching the road to the castle. The kids loved the big statue of Robin Hood.
Then it was on to the Castle, or Castle museum, with it’s alabaster carvings, watercolours, wedgewood (I really want to make a wedgewood inspired cake) Nottingham lace, costumes and stoneware, including bear jugs among just a few of the things to see.
I particularly enjoyed the costume section, they even have the orginal outfits worn by Torvil and Dean when they won their gold medal for skating to Bolero.
There were also sections for the kids where they could explore all the animals in Noah’s Ark, dress up and enjoy playing in a gypsy caravan.
Great post – it's funny, mine always end up in the sandpit for the longest time too!! x
I'd have been happier if it had been a bit warmer, but I was a bit chilly sitting around while they were having fun
I had to read this! We were at university in Nottingham and I ended up staying there for five years in total. We 'officially' got engaged in the grounds of Nottingham Castle (although we'd discussed it and bought the very cheap ring in advance!).
I hope all goes well for Star over the next few weeks. x
I have to say, I do like Nottingham and I've been there quite a few times in the past couple of years including a girly night out!
I'm from Derby, so Nottingham Castle reminds me of school trips and cheeky pints with my 19 year old boyfriend when I was a scary 16 year old 😀
Best of luck Star – hope it isn't too much of a nightmare and everything goes to plan x
Looks like a nice trip! Everything looks pretty! Goodluck with Star's operation.
What a great family day out full of interesting history and plenty of activities and fun for the children. Best wishes that all goes well for Star and thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.

This looks great. We are on holiday in Nottingham beginning of July will try to visit here, thanks x
