I love Facebook, I really do. It’s such a fantastic way of keeping up with friends and family old and new. I first joined mainly to keep up with a group of friends who had moved from a forum that I frequented daily. That was back in 2009 and I’m still friends with many of them today.
I use Facebook regularly, updating my status with practically everything and anything. I have spent hours playing Facebook games (Something I rarely have time for these days) and taken part in Facebook parties and events as well as spending the evening sharing music with friends.
My friends list is fairly compact, I have my family, some of whom I’ve not seen for years, I have friends from work, friends from school (jeez that was a long time ago!) friends from forums, a few blogger friends and even my ex husband! All the people on my facebook page I’ve known for a long time and 90% of them I’ve met in real life.
Facebook is where I share my joys and woes, where I post my photos and record my days out. It’s where I go if I’m looking for advice or have a questions I want answered. It’s also where I check what’s going on in my friends life. It’s all about the sharing and keeping in touch. And Yes, I have been on Facebook while a little drunk!
However, there is one thing I realise about Facebook….it’s not my entire life. If someone dissapears off my friends list I wonder why then move on. If someone upsets me with their posts I block them and move on. If someone ignores me or doesn’t click like on my photo’s or status update, I don’t fret. It’s only Facebook after all. It’s not going to affect my life.
What never fails to surprise me is the playground attitude prevelant on Facebook. Not amongst my friends, but dare to venture off into a group or community and that’s where the trouble is. People not only get nasty as they hide behind their computer screen but you also get those that constantly attention seek and everything has to revolve around them, throwing a hissy fit at every opportunity. This is why I don’t have those people on my friends list.
Then there is the washing line. Why do people air their dirty washing on Facebook? You get everything from infidelity to stealing, all sorts of accusations and outings. Everyone needs to grumble sometimes and that’s fine. But if it’s personal then keep it so, maybe talk to people in real life rather than on Facebook if you need. Or have a secret group of trusted friends to moan to. Don’t put it out their for all and sundry to see, trust me, you don’t really want every one knowing your business.
One more gripe…if you are going to write a status then write a status. Ok, a teaser is fine….’guess where I’m going?’ but don’t forget to come back and say where..too many people just leave it at that and never say anything again. I find it infuriating and I know I’m not the only one, it’s got a name…vaguebooking!
So Facebook is perfect for those who suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and keeping in touch, playing games, arranging meetings and lots of other things. Facebook, however, is simply Facebook, it’s not the be all and end all. Try logging off for a few days and you’ll see, there is life after Facebook.
So, I’m opening up the bag here, what bugs you on Facebook?
Are you a Facebook liker or hater?
What do you use Facebook for?
oh, and post about Facebook wouldn’t be complete without a link to my Facebook Blog Page would it, come and find Raisiebay and say hi!
Also, I have a page documenting my Star’s health and journey if you are interested.
This is a great post. I could not agree with you more about "vaguebooking". I hate that! What I dislike about Facebook are the ones that continue to complain every single day! I have to (not delete them) unfollow them. And people who constantly post pictures of their dogs! uugh.
i totally have a love / hate relationship with facebook. Initially i just didn't get it – It felt so public that I never wanted to put anything on there. but then it enabled me to connect up with some relatives who live miles away and we rarely get to see so it is nice to get little glimpses into their lives. My trouble is I can easily get addicted – I found i had 'liked' over 1,500 pages on facebook so it was overwhelming trying to go through my feed so i've got it down to between 500 – 600 now but still tend to avoid going on there too much as it takes me too long to look at everything. x
Facebook is taking up a lot of my time these days – I find it is very addictive! I do love it though, and I always bear in mind that you can't possibly see everyone else's status all the time, or vice versa, so you have to accept you're only getting a small picture of someone's life (or them of yours). I probably am guilty of over-sharing, but people who don't like it can look away 😉
I recently deleted the FB app off my phone but then I just started using the web browser to read it instead! It's an addictive site for sure
I am pretty open on facebook. I can not stand teaser posts
I have to admit to having a huge issue with the teaser statuses…. it narks me when people 'don't want to say' despite deciding to take the time to put something which would appear to intentionally demand interest. Aside from that I'm an over-sharer and over-user, content as I can be for people to defriend me or what not. It's fun, as long as you remember people only share what they want- it's not really real life 🙂
Oh yes, all of those things annoy me too, particularly the ones that don't really say anything, the "oh I can't believe that just happened" with no follow up. What's the point??!
I have a personally account and a blogger page in Facebook and I'm quite active there. But I try to keep a detached attitude, just because of all that cattiness and the playground attitude. Just not how I want to spend my time.
I hate vaguebooking too, just attention seeking. I have fallen out of love a little with FB, but it is still useful to keep in touch with people x
I love Facebook but you get some horrible people on there that think they can say whatever they want. Um no!
I use Facebook to keep in touch with friends that I don't get to see every day.
I'm a bit up and down with FB. I have a couple of private groups (a writers one and a general chat with old school friends one) that are great, but outside that I only update my status once or twice a week. My friends seem to vary from posting numerous times a day to almost never posting at all! my favourite posts to read are funny ones. I don't like passive aggressive ones like "Oh you just can't trust some people – I'm going to be deleting some of you later today." which make you think 'What?" "Why?" "Who?" Also sometimes I think FB can breed feelings of insecurity when others seem to be living a perfect life! #pocolo
Very well said! I like Facebook, but don't use it as much as you – I'm more of a Twitter fan. Have never heard the phrase 'vague book' before, but that's the thing that bugs me most of it all. It's just complete attention seeking to see how many people can say 'You ok hun?'. Grrr!
I quite like facebook but I do find it annoying when they don't show pages that I like news feeds 🙁
I just dont like people who take photos of their bag & jewelry collection and post it in FB. Showing off much! You know whats worse, some of the bags are fake! UGH! #pocolo
SO true and I hate all those 'sad face' or 'just had the most exciting thing happen! Can't tell you what though!' or like you said airing their dirty laundry! x
I use Facebook mainly to keep in touch with my family who live hundreds of miles away, and friends who are spread across the country. My biggest gripe though is the vague status updates you mentioned. It's a blatant attention-seeking tactic and it really gets on my nerves.
