MY WORD OF THE WEEK
Garden
The kids are still off school until Monday and I so wanted to do something nice with them this week. Maybe visit a National Trust Property, or the Wildlife Centre or even just the park. But, I’ve not been well and now the weather has changed and become dismal.
The thing is though, the kids are happy staying at home. Getting them to go out anywhere is a bit of a nightmare sometimes. So, it’s my own guilt trip I’m feeding. I think if I asked the kids they would probably say they’ve had a great holiday.
Last week we’d managed to get a few things done and one of those was the garden. (Ok, I didn’t do any work, but that’s not because I didn’t want to.) Graham cut the grass and tidied up the side of the house, which is now looking good for some planting. I’m thinking veggies and herbs rather than flowers. We have a couple of trees planted at the top of the garden, not big ones, but they should look nice once they’ve grown a bit more. And my potted plants are starting to show signs of life. We also have some new plants out the front.
The sunny days have been spent in the garden. The kids dug out their Nerf guns and had a full on war with the neighbour’s kids. They had so much fun. Despite them not actually having any Nerf bullets left. Then the neighbours kids came over and played on our swings, slide and trampoline. It makes me feel kind of sad because the Little Man is the only child of mine that is the right size for the slide and swings, the girls have outgrown it, and the Little Man will too, very soon. Next year this part of the garden will be looking much barer. We will still keep the trampoline though.
Al Fresco
On Monday, Graham fired up the BBQ for the first time and we ate outdoors. It was nice despite us not having a garden table. (I have one on order, the last one was glass and broke in a storm.) We made do with the pasting table and a disposable table cloth (which happened to be a Christmas one!)
I ordered food in the shopping which was delivered on Monday and they replaced the steaks with a leg of lamb!! They also replaced the burger baps with finger rolls, so we ended up with 48 finger rolls and no baps. Sometimes you just have to make do though, and we did. But, we haven’t eaten the lamb yet. (It cost £12 more than the steaks, it’s a good job Sainsbury’s give you the extra cost back when they substitute.)
The weather changed midweek so there has been no more garden fun, but the plants are looking healthy.
My next job is to dig out the kid’s gardening book and see what we can plant or do in our new bit of garden at the side of the house.

I can be the same as you Anne, I try to plan days out because I think I should but the kids would much rather be at home in our garden. It sounds like everyone had a nice weekend, it really was barbecue weather wasn’t it. Supermarket substitutes always make me giggle, why on earth swap baps for finger rolls, I bet you had a job fitting a burger on those. I hope you have a nice weekend x
Oh my goodness, I love the sound of your Monday garden meal. No kidding. The makeshift table, out of season table covering and make do food. Far better than a perfect one that would look better in a diy store’s catalogue. I’m sure your new garden table is going to be more robust, but I do love a quirky gathering! My children are the same with loving time out in the garden. The weather turned, as they went back to school. Hope your garden planning goes well. Oh, and thanks for hosting. #wotw

Ugh! Our Iceland was all sold out of baps over the weekend. I’m guessing everyone had the same idea as you and had a BBQ. hehehe
So sorry to read that you are not feeling well! I love to plant herbs in my garden too. They are so easy and using fresh herbs in cooking is so nice. I even allow some of them to bloom and use them in bouquets for the house. They make the whole house smell wonderful!
It’s funny reading about your garden fun, I’ve gradually had less and less toys in the garden. Mine of all outgrown them now, even the trampoline went last year! The only toys in my garden now, are the dogs haha. I hope you are feeling better now, even with the blah weather x
Kids love being at home in the garden they just want to sun free, especially with nerf guns, Jack and Joe still love a Nerf war! Sometimes they ambush me when I drive home it drives me mad. Cant believe your order got so messed up, hope you managed to make it all work. Hasn’t the weather been so bad? Thank goodness it is picking up finally x
