Nothing says Happy New Year like Christmas cake right? Ok, maybe everyone has got out of Christmas mode now, decorations are being removed, trees taken down, Christmas has left the building… Not quite. Today I will take down the decorations and the tree will come down on the 5th January as always. In the meantime we still have quite a few Christmas treats left including the Christmas cake which we only made a start on last night. We still have mince pies (Best Before 4th Jan) and chocolates (I know, unbelievable) We even have cheese and alcohol to get through, including the single malt whisky my daughter bought for me.
Christmas Cake
I usually make a Christmas cake. I start in October and keep it in a tin feeding it with alcohol each week. I then decorate it the week before Christmas. This cake was bought from Sainsburys. It cost about the same but was half the size. And, even though it contained alcohol, well, my cake tastes better. (Even if I do say so myself.)
Welcome 2021
Just so you know I’m not still stuck in Christmas mode ….ok maybe give me this last day, I’m in hospital tomorrow… here is a photo of something I treated myself to this year. A 2021 Dairy Diary.
I was gifted my first Dairy Diary by a friend in 1988, just before my first born child arrived. I bought one myself for the next eleven years. I still have every one. I went on to online diary keeping in 2004 and started Raisie Bay in 2011 which has been where I have kept most memories. I’ve tried keeping journals but, apart from the baby ones, I’ve not had much success. So, I’ve gone back to a traditional, fill in each day, diary. And isn’t it a pretty one. I couldn’t resist the butterflies.
Happy New Year! Let’s hold this one with great hope.

That’s a beautifully iced Christmas cake! #sundaysnapshot
The Christmas cake you bought does look good but I don’t think you can beat a homemade one! my mum always makes one but I don’t think she feeds it with alcohol every week, I bet that tastes delicious!
Happy New Year to you and your family :o)

I love Christmas cake and only started eating ours a couple of days ago. We actually still have quite a few treats left to eat and I don’t think I’ll be buying any alcohol for the next couple of months. I overbought. lol
I have one of those Dairy Diary’s and I love it!
Happy new year! x

I don’t know what Christmas cake is, but I am going to check out the link. Any cake that you have been adding alcohol to since October has to be good! Happy New Year, Anne!

It’s not to everyone’s taste, but if you like a rich fruit cake that’s seeped in alcohol then you are in for a treat.
I have never heard of this before. It sounds like fruit cake but the two months of booze pouring is throwing me. Does it taste super boozy when you eat it? How does the cake stay good for so long? Is it wet or just moist? So many questions, I’m so intrigued! Also it looks absolutely stunning.
The cake is kept wrapped in greaseproof paper in an air tight tin. The alcohol is added, just one tablespoon a week. (I sprinkle it over the base, then next time the top of the cake) I use brandy, but you can use anything really, it acts as a preservative. The end result, when you take it out to ice it, should be a rich, moist but not wet, cake which smells and tastes boozy, but also delicious. It’s not one for the kids or drivers though!
We’ve also got a ton of food & alcohol left over, that cake does look nice x
I often find that I prefer my own cooking to store bought things too! I think nothing beats that homemade taste. You have a beautiful diary there. #MMBC
I hope it went well for you at the hospital. We’ve still got some Christmas chocolate left and we’re going to buy my dad some mince pies (he definitely needs to put weight on after Covid) as the ones in Sainsbury’s have got an April date on them.
Love that you’re getting back to writing a diary every day. I’ve done this every day since I was 10! The problem is that my handwriting is horrendous and I often can’t even read what I wrote the previous day.
