This week I picked up my new car and I love it. I can’t drive it yet but I’m practicing often and hopefully I’ll get the hang of it.
I took this photo as they brought the car to me at the car dealers. It’s a Peugeot 2008 and I think I might call it Roy. The colour is Cumulus like the clouds behind it.
I’d like to tell you a little bit about the hand controls. I can’t really explain how it feels but my feet just don’t behave like normal feet. When I walk or stand it feels like I’m standing in high heels because the back of my legs are taught. This also means that I can’t feel the floor under my feet properly. I have to wear proper sturdy soles on my shoes or slippers, I cannot walk at all barefoot. Now, that probably makes no sense to you. When it comes to driving I cannot feel the pedals under my feet, I can’t tell how far I’m pushing down. I also have to think really hard where I’m putting my feet which means changing from pedal to pedal would take me way too long to control the car. This is why I have hand controls.
The hand controls are fitted just under the steering wheel and it’s a lever which I use my right hand for. I pull to go and push to stop. At the end of the lever is a little switch which I can control with my thumb and it works the indicators. It took a while to work it out but it’s one click to turn them on and then another click in the same direction to turn them off. I can’t tell you how many times I clicked in the opposite direction to try and turn them off, but that just turned the indicator back on to the opposite side. Because I have to use my hand constantly to work the accelerator and brake, it means that I only have one hand left to steer, so I have a knob on the steering wheel to help me turn one handed.
The car is automatic and anyone can drive it without using the hand controls as the pedals are still fully functional.
It’s a really lovely car to drive, very smooth and easy to control. I just need to get used to the hand controls and build up some confidence to face more traffic.
Congratulations on your new car! It looks stunning against that picturesque blue sky. Your Peugeot 2008 seems to be a versatile and accommodating choice. Safe travels and many happy adventures with “Roy”.
Lovely car! I hope oyu have many happy times and new adventures in her! MMBC
Huge congrats! My dad had hand control for years because of neuorpathy in his feet and legs. The hand controls were a life-saver.
I love reading your blog, I just haven’t commented.
Oh, and I agree with you about all the horn honking. I think sometimes the other drivers think we might be looking at our phone and that’s why we’re not going.
