France is one of the most popular European countries. Its affluence and political power did play a significant role in that, but it is also its reputation for the cultural spirit and the beauty of the landscape that makes it such a long-desired travel destination for many people all around the world. Fashion, literature and painting are just a few of the creative industries that flourish there and set the example for other countries to follow.
One more cultural element that makes France popular is food. French cuisine is famous for the high-quality ingredients and the delicate flavours. Whatever French city or village you go to, there are some foods that you must taste their authentic versions in order to appreciate them – maybe even more than you do now.
After a long day of exploring a city, there is no better way to end it by enjoying a delicious meal. We recommend hiring a car with Enjoy Travel because you can be sure that you will find the cheapest ride so that you can spend everything you’ve saved on a high-end restaurant. Let’s see what you can order, starting with savoury menu items.
Salty Food 1: Quiche
Quiche is a kind of tart filled with savoury egg custard and pieces of vegetable, cheese and meat. The fact that it is easy to create variations of this recipe, by adding pieces of whatever types of vegetables, cheeses and meats people like, and that it is equally delicious when served either hot or cold make it a popular dish in the whole world.
Salty Food 2: Foie Gras
This is one more food that other countries have taken and produced their own version. The original French way is that foie gras is made by fattening the liver of a duck or a goose. It is usually served as a starter, so do not expect to get satiated just with that.
Salty Food 3: Ratatouille
A food that can function as a main dish is ratatouille. The original recipe came from Nice, and it is a pretty healthy food as it consists of stewed vegetables. The vegetables in question are tomato, onion, courgette, aubergine and bell peppers. It is best served hot.
Sweet Food 1: Madeleines
Madeleines are very small sponge-cakes made of flour, sugar, eggs, almonds or other nuts. Their shell-like shape makes them stand out from other similar sweets. This recipe originated from north eastern France.
Sweet Food 2: Mille-feuille
Mille-feuille, meaning one thousand layers, or also known as Napoleon, usually consists of three layers of puff pastry. Between these layers, a cream of vanilla or custard is added. Again, you will find many variations of this recipe worldwide.
Sweet Food 3: Crepes
Crepes had to be part of this list as it is difficult to find someone who does not like this dessert that originated in Brittany. You need flour, milk and eggs in order to make the extremely thin pancakes. You can fill the crepes with either sweet or savoury ingredients.

All foods I would recommend, except ratatouille!!! Small point, Anne, ‘mille’ is thousand, not million
you are right Enda, not about the ratatouille, I’m quite happy to throw anything into a pot and eat it, but yes, a mille is a thousand.
Great list of food I’d love to eat in France. I’m ready to go. #MMBC
I’m feeling quite fancy. We had quiche tonight for tea and I had no idea it was French. x
