With non essential shops re-opening, I’m not personally rushing to shop yet. However, if I did I would most definitely be visiting bookshops first. I love browsing new books and seeing what’s on offer. As a family we have spent many happy hours in bookshops. I even love second hand bookshops, probably even more. With a former career as a librarian/Information Assistant, I can honestly say..I love books!
However, as I’m not ready to go out shopping just yet, I am still enjoying my books by buying online and I even have my own account at Bookshop.org where I share some of my favourite books. I’m adding to my lists on regular basis.
Bookshop.org supports lots of local bookshops, so you can search and find your local bookshop and order from there too. It’s a great way of showing support and keeping bookshops open and thriving in these uncertain times.
My Changing Book Loves over the Years
I became an avid reader early on and really enjoyed the horror books from Stephen King and James Herbert.
I started with The Rats by James Herbert, and once I had read the trilogy I went on to his other books. I loved them all and some of them have stayed with me over the years. You know you’ve read a good book when you can visualise a scene some 40 years later. (I’m thinking of the scene in the boy’s gym in The Fog…eeek!)
I enjoyed Stephen King too, and remember reading books like It and Pet Sematary at a very young age. They didn’t bother me at all. In fact I’d probably be more scared reading them now.
I couldn’t choose a favourite and even though I’ve seen all of his television versions, I have only ever seen one play. I took my eldest son to watch Guards Guards in the theatre many years ago and it was totally magical, so it always holds a special place in my heart.
You can even buy a script to the play!
Although I have never really enjoyed the films, I did enjoy the ‘Twilight’ series of books by Stephenie Meyer.
I also really enjoyed the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong. Great for werewolves, witches and vampire lovers.
There are so many superb fantasy books out there, I’m really going to be working on my list of favourites for my shop.
I love a good thriller and will be adding to my list of books for this genre too. One of my favourite authors is Sheryl Brown who switched from romance to Thriller. I wasn’t sure how she would pull it off, but her thriller stories have fast become books that I’m waiting for the next one.
Here is a review of one of Sheryl Browne’s books that I read recently, The New Girlfriend.
I have her latest book on my audible ready for my next read.
There are so many good thriller writers out there, I do love a story that you can get to grip with the characters and the story moves seemlessly.
I could go on and on about my love of books and all the different genres I enjoy. I also love a little sci-fi and even the occasional romantic novel. I have dabbled into philosophical books from Jostein Gaarder starting with the brilliant Sophie’s World.
Paulo Coelho is also one of my favourites, I particularly enjoyed Veronika Decides to Die and The Alchemist.
What type of books do you have on your bookshelf? Have you read any of my favourites?
