Warning..This post is purely proud mummy boasting! Well, we are all allowed that sometimes aren’t we?
My Little Man was a slow starter, I was very worried about him at first. He hadn’t reached all his developmental goals by the age of two and that’s why he was given extra support with a place at a pre-school group. He didn’t even start walking until he was nearly two and I was still picking him up from nursery in his pushchair at three.
Now he is four. Four years and seven months to be precise, and you can’t tell he’s any difference from any other child in reception class (despite him being the youngest there.)
I went to parents evening and his teacher was obviously enamoured by him. You can’t help it, he’s very cute, he just does cute things which make you go awww. However, he can also be difficult, but not in a naughty way. It’s hard to explain but we both agreed that he is mischievous. He gets into places he’s not supposed to be, gets hold of things he’s not supposed to have but he’s never unkind, or spiteful and he never answers back.
We both agreed that when he’s in the mood to learn that he’s very bright. Especially with his reading and writing. In fact I think he’s doing much better than the girls were at his age.
Every night I read him a bedtime story, but lately he wants to read to me instead. If it’s an easy book then he will read it by himself, if it’s longer we will take it in turns, but his skill at reading has amazed me. He never asks what a word is, no matter how complicated. He takes each unfamiliar word and breaks it down into segments and works out the sounds before putting it back together and saying it over and over until it become a word that makes sense. How clever is that for a four year old!!
Here are some of his favourite books at the moment:
No Bot by Sue Hendra
Bernard is a robot who loses his bottom with hilarious results.
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
Julia Donaldson is always a favourite but this is his favourite book because we love to do the wooshing action when they go off on the broom.
The Tiger Who Came to Tea by Judith Kerr
We saw the play for this story and it has become a firm favourite now.
