Yesterday I had the most wonderful day with old friends. We went to see Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty at Birmingham Hippodrome. We had some really good seats. Here is the photo of the Stage Curtain from our seats with no cropping or zooming.
I love the ballet but Matthew Bourne puts a real different spin on all of his performances. I’ll be writing a full review very soon.
This is not the first Matthew Bourne ballet I’ve seen. Back in 2018 I saw Cinderella which was set in the Blitz of London during WWII. Then I saw Romeo + Juliette set in a mental institute. Next up was The Red Shoes which was more like the original film which was based on the story by Hanz Christian Handerson, so I guess it was dark enough already. Finally, I saw The Nutcracker which features a lot of sweets!
I’d be hard pressed to pick a favourite but Sleeping Beauty was truly amazing. Being given the Matthew Bourne treatment it was turned into a gothic delight and the costumes were amazing.
Up until 2017 I’d not even been to the ballet but I went to see the Nutcracker for the first time and I was mesmerised. I’ve seen it twice, once with my friend and once with my girls. I have also seen Don Quixote which featured some world renowned dancers and was a real treat to see.
Yesterday’s trip was taken with my usual ballet partner but we took a friend to see her first ever ballet. We thought she might like it as she likes all things gothic and Matthew Bourne never fails to deliver a good show. She loved it! She said she would never normally like ballet as it’s really not her thing, but the whole show was stunning and she felt quite emotional at the end.
Have you ever been to a ballet? Have you ever seen anything from Matthew Bourne? The Nutcracker was on television over Christmas and you may be able to still catch it on ‘catch up’ television. It’s not the same as actually being at a performance though.
How wonderful. It sounds like you had a really good time. I can’t wait to read more about the show. x
It’s been a long time since I saw a ballet. How wonderful for you! #MMBC
That sounds amazing! I have been to a couple of ballets, but never a Matthew Bourne. I must admit I was thoroughly confused by Swan Lake, but really enjoyed Cinderella.
Ooo there’s so many pantos on at present – Thanks for sharing and for linking up with #MySundaySnapshot.
