I was a late starter into the world of motoring. I decided to learn to drive when I reached 29 years (and my
personal taxi husband had run off with the car another woman)
It took just five months and I was ready for my test. My lovely instructor assured me I’d be fine so long as I didn’t get Mr Brain as my tester. Guess who I got? Yes, Mr Brain! Apparently he was the worst in the centre and barely passed anyone, especially first time.
I think he liked me. While I was sobbing after he gave me the results he was saying ‘did you hear me properly, I said you Passed!’ (I had heard him, it was just too emotional)
So it was time for my first car. The advice was, get a banger, your first car never lasts long no point in wasting any money. So I got a banger, a 1982 Volkswagon Polo in dark blue. She looked a little like this:
I called her Polly and she was with me for two years. I loved her dearly and she served me well. We did have a couple of little bumps, like the time I forgot someone was in front of me at a junction, and the little argument we had with a concrete post in a car park. (stupid place to put a concrete post!)
When she finally gave up on me, I traded her in for…..another VW Polo!
Do you remember your first car?
